William Joseph Blanton, Jr
December 13, 1949-January 10, 2012

Bill was a relentless competitor in sports (especially sailing), business, and life in general.  He had a huge heart and lived life with a passion.  If the guy with the most toys wins, he won by a landslide.  If the guy with the biggest loving family wins, he took that one, too.  If the guy with the most speeding tickets… no, I guess we better leave that alone.  He was very generous and loved to share his good fortune with others – whether that was sharing his toys or serious contributions to educational institutions like Collegiate, Webb, and George Mason.  He fought a long hard battle with cancer and never complained – he methodically attacked the disease with his engineer’s technical focus and his legal research skills – he did his best to keep it invisible to those around him and act like it was no big deal.  The world has lost a brilliant mind, as well as a loving father, brother, husband, friend, mentor and a great compassionate man.
